Tyranid List Building For Casual (non-Tournament) Gaming

Today I wanted to discuss casual (a.k.a. non-tournament) list building with the new dex.  We CAN be competitive when we play against friends in our local hobby groups or in games at a local gaming store.  Most importantly for me is the question…”am I having fun?”  I have played in a few tournaments, but it is not something I enjoy that much.

Sure it feels great to win a couple of games against a stranger bringing a list you had no idea about.  But I would much rather play against someone I can laugh with when I have to remove, literally, a handful of models.  Simply, someone who is there to play a game.

First, list building in this venue should certainly be situational.  Unlike tournament play where we have no real idea who we will be playing, in a casual game we know our opponent and the type of army they are bringing.  This allows us to avoid a utilitarian list build, trying to be everything against everybody.  Some units that seem to be “must take,” such as Flyrants, Crones and Mawlocs in tournament lists moving about the internet will not work against certain opponents in my gaming circle.

Second, builds don’t always have to be competitive...they can also be narrative.  It is fun to try a list with waves of Gribblies (not unlike Storm of Blades), then one with 6-8 MCs, another with a “Wings of Death” theme.  Maybe a list with almost all Infiltrators and Deep Strikers.  I think after Big Game 2014, I am going to try this type of gaming for a change.  Not just building lists to win, but to have fun in the process.  Narrative lists can also be competitive, but as with previous commentary, they can be used against certain opponents with more success than others.  Even if I end up getting punched around, I will have had a great time showing up with a an original list that makes folks look at me like I’m crazy!

A few ideas presented here…points are approximate and will be affected by how you kit out broods in terms of Biomorphs or Artifacts.  Also, not all of these lists are FOC compliant.  You will want to add HQs, etc., to round them out.

Wings of Fury (2000 pts)

2 Dakka Flyrants

2 Hive Crones

20 Gargoyles (TS)

20 Hormagaunts (TS)

20 Hormagaunts (TS)

20 Hormagaunts (TS)

10 Stealers with Broodlord

10 Stealers with Broodlord

Not only can you get stuck-in early with Hormagaunts moving so quickly (as fast as Jump Infantry), the two Tyrants with Hive Commander allow you to Outflank two broods of Stealers with Broodlords.  I can see lots of Horror paralyzing defenders as the flyers and fleet Stealers close on their prey.

Look Out Below (1600 points)

Mawloc

Mawloc

Trygon Prime

8 Raveners with Red Terror

8 Raveners with Red Terror

8 Raveners with Red Terror

3 MCs and 27 multi-wound models in your opponents lap by Turn 2 if you take a Comm Relay.  This is almost 100 wounds to take out, and does not count any add-ons to round out the list in terms of FOC.  You will obviously need to address Synapse for the Raveners.

Infiltrators Delight (2000 points)

Dakka Flyrant

Deathleaper

3 Lictors

3 Lictors

3 Lictors

10 Stealers with Broodlord

10 Stealers with Broodlord

10 Stealers with Broodlord

30 Devilgaunts with Tyranid Prime

Not only is this a very self-sufficient list with few worries about Synapse, but the Prime and his shooty brood can Outflank with help from the Flyrant.  Up close and personal…with some tasty shooting thrown in!

Carnifex Carnival (1900 points)

Swarmlord w/2 Tyrant Guard

2 Venomthropes

2 Venomthropes

Tyrannofex

3 Carnifex (1 w/Claws and Regen, 2 Dakkafexes)

3 Carnifex (1 w/Claws and Regen, 2 Dakkafexes)

Would certainly be intimidating to even the most shooty opponent.  If the Swarmlord can roll Catalyst, these big fellas might actually be able to do some stomping!

I think you get the idea.  Try different builds.  Have fun with the units and models we have now.  Sure, I want to win.  I also want to have fun for 3-4 hours with a friend.  If I want to really be competitive and get beat up, I can start playing Rugby again.
