Anyone Have A Can Opener? Tyranids and the Challenge of Killing Armour

The revival of the Tyranid version of the drop pod, the Tyrannocyte, has brought tears of joy to many a 'Nid player.  But why?  For me at least, it once more gives the Hive Mind a chance to kill enemy armour without resorting to a Flying Circus or marching Dakkafexes.  Let's take a look at how the 'Nids chances of killing those iron boxes has changed.

Get Your 40K Another Way - Warhammer 40K Armagenddon

In addition to my plastic crack habit, I am an avid board gamer and computer (not video) game player.  For the most part, I play Real Time Strategy (RTS) games like StarCraft and Tiberium Wars.  This week, though, let's take a look at GWs latest addition to the family, a Turn Based Strategy (TBS) game called Warhammer 40k Armageddon.

A Pocket Full of Spears - Drop Pods Return

So we appear to have come full circle.  GW in its wisdom decided to take our Pods away back in January in an otherwise solid Dex.  Now, almost a year later, they give us those Pods back...with their own models of course.  The models are boss and the rules solid.  The rules have been covered thoroughly on the Interweb.  I will focus on how we might best use these new units to acquire and consume prey...

The Frustration of Limited Editions

I have to say I am quite disappointed in the direction it seems that GW has taken with some of its most interesting new releases.  In particular, Shield of Baal - Leviathan.  I see this on BoLS as a rumor and walk over to the fridge for a cold pint.  I take a look at my computer screen a few minutes later, the damn thing is sold out!

Tyranid Next Wave - Two New Monstrouns Creatures

With rumors abounding, it was time to stop by the local GW store and get the facts on the two new 'Nid Big Boys.  After looking over the new White Dwarf, here's a breakdown and some commentary on the Maleceptor and Toxicrene.

Commentary: The World Is Flat (Or At Least Shaped Like A Cube)

We spend hundreds of hours every year (or maybe every month) involved in our 40K life.  Did you ever stop to think that the hobby you love (and sometimes hate) depends entirely on rolling a small pile of cubes?

Roaches In The Walls - Tyranids And Stronghold Assault

How do you rationalize Tyranids being able to use buildings from the Stronghold Assault book?  After all, doesn’t the Hive Mind make its own buildings, also known as bio-constructs?  Aaahh…but let’s think this through…

Can't Get A Target Lock - Rune Priest, Venerable Dread and Malifaux

What is going on?  Another tabletop gaming system?  Are you freakin’ kidding me?!  Hard to focus when you are in such a target rich environment; 40K, board gaming...now Malifaux!

Let Slip The Dogs of War - The Wolves of Fenris Have Arrived

To be honest, I was a bit uneasy about putting brush and paint to models again; it has been several months after all.  There was also the issue of color schemes.  All that said, I think we got some decent results after several days of trial and error.  More importantly, there is the discovery of some modeling products that really hit the spot…

Back In The Saddle - Tools, Paint and Primed Models

Opening up a new box of parts-filled plastic sprues never felt so good!  It has been a long time since I built a 40K model…almost five months.  May not seem like a long time, but it sure felt like it.  When I removed that cellophane wrapper and opened the box of Thunderwolves, it felt like I had not done any model building in ages.  I would swear they even had that new car smell…

Ghosts of Fenris - Fall Is The Time for Change

As you read this you may be thinking…he takes three months off and now he’s coming back with a new army?!  That, as they say, is the truth of it.  What is Fall for if not for change?...

Battle Report - Tyranids vs Eldar Part 1

Wave Serpents, Death from Above and Tank Killer Hormagaunts…all this and more in the latest game against my good friend, and nemesis, Kevin… In our previous three games, his Eldar have triumphed over my Nids; the last encounter on the last turn by some wily Wraith Guard jumping out of a burning transport.  Kevin has been nigh invincible with his Eldar overall, and against my Bugs in particular.  This time, however, the battle would not end well for the Space Elves…

Flying Monstrous Creatures in 7th edition

I have not been a big fan of these beauties, even with the nice options now available to Tyranids in the new ‘dex.  You would not know this to look at my army; I have a Flyrant and two Hive Crones (which I sometimes proxy as Harpies)...

7th Edition Broken? Just Shut It And Play The Game (Or Not)

I will take the bold step and say that the new rule set is not broken…if anything is true, it is that an abuse of the rule set, as always occurs, is once again taking place.  Saying that the car you intentionally run into a concrete wall is broken is an apt analogy.   Let’s talk about this from a different perspective…

7th Edition Part 2 - New Psychic Phase and More Misc Commentary

First, a correction in the last post…FMCs have the Jink special rule as standard, so in fact they do get a Jink save in order to avoid taking wounds.  Other than that, the more I look at this rule set the more I like…

7th Edition is Here - Solid Changes And The Need To Communicate (Part 1)

The timing of the new codex was great…I just finished my grad school work and got all my exams written for school.  After Friday, I can dive into the new book and get some games in.  In fact, I have a game with my friend Mike next week, and it will be my last game of 6th edition!  So let’s get on with the new dex…

Commentary - The Tyranny of Choice and Other Touching Cliches

Having been neglectful (once again) of keeping this blog current (yes, 4 weeks is WAY too long), it is time to step up and get some words on the page.  This installment will be discussing, appropriately, the things that come between us and our beloved hobby...

Big Game 2014 - 120,000 Pts of 40K Insanity

It’s been a few weeks now, but Big Game 2014 was another success!  What is “Big Game?”  It is an annual tradition of Milwaukee’s D-Company gaming clan.  People from as far afield as Minnesota and the West Coast bring the stink and just about everything except the kitchen sink (that TOO if it could be converted!).  Let’s take a look at this years awesomeness…

Battle Report - Tyranids vs White Scars

I would like to start this post with an apology to each of you who have taken your valuable time to read Shadow of Prometheus.  Since last July, I have been able to post at least once a week in order to bring you my perspective on our hobby.  This has been from a mainly Tyranid viewpoint.   Since late February, I have not been able to keep up with that commitment.  The reasons don’t matter.  The good news is that we are back on track.  Thank you for your patience…let’s get this show on the road!

Commentary - What Type of 40K Hobbyist Are You?

During our annual Big Game this past weekend, I heard a friend and long-time player say “I don’t know what I am going to do next.  I have three painted armies, have converted many of them, and don’t want to start another army.”  What do you say to that?  It certainly got me to thinking...

Tyranid Skyshield Landing Pad and Used Spore Pods

It’s finished!  I put the final touches on the last Noax Secundus terrain base today.  Wow…what a project!  22 bases and…wait for it…our own version of a Skyshield Landing Pad!

Tyranid List Building For Casual (non-Tournament) Gaming

Today I wanted to discuss casual (a.k.a. non-tournament) list building with the new dex.  We CAN be competitive when we play against friends in our local hobby groups or in games at a local gaming store.  Most importantly for me is the question…”am I having fun?”  I have played in a few tournaments, but it is not something I enjoy that much.

Noax Secundus Terrain Project - Almost Finished!

It has been awhile since I reported on where we were with this massive terrain project (20+ bases when finished).  At the last progress report we had a whopping four bases done.  I am happy to report that I just finished the 16th base!

The time for Tyranid rumors is over…The Hive Fleet has arrived!!!  Yeah baby!!!  However, we need evaluate the Rumor Scoreboard for accuracy.  Let’s see how Prometheus did this season…

New Tyranid Codex - Troops

Many folks have had a few weeks to get some experience with the new dex.  Let’s see what we have in the way of Troops in the new book…

Conversion Crazy - Old One Eye, Autofex & Quad Cannon

Finished some Tyranid conversions this past week; two for game use and one for just fun (unless my opponents are really open minded…you’ll see).  Here is a description of each…

New Tyranid Codex - Positive Changes

“Mr. Sunshine” here again…as some of the blog’s followers have started to call me.  Good for them, and timely since this installment is going to be a summary/commentary on the positive changes that we have in our new dex.  Lets’ get right to it...

New Tyranid Codex - Tyranids Psychic Powers, Better Known As "They're In My Head!"

Here we go again…the guy who actually thinks this codex is playable!  I have two games under my belt; 1 win 1 loss.  The loss was because I took a totally inappropriate army; I was expecting mech and got assault of the worst kind…Blood Angels with Wolf allies…yeesh!  Even then, was pretty close at the end.  You CAN win with this dex.  Learn it.  Play it.  Adapt.  It’s what Tyranids do!

New Tyranid Codex - First Impressions

Let’s start this post by stating that I am pleased with the new codex.  Remember, I am approaching this as someone who is moving on from the past.  We can either lay on the floor, kicking and screaming, or face reality and understand that these are our rules.  However, I am not going Pollyanna here, and there are some things I am disappointed did not happen.  But this disappointment is not based on changes from the last dex…it is based on missed opportunities.

Cometh The Hive Fleet

Saturday seems like a year away!  Only four days to go before the arrival of the Hive Fleet, and this last week before touchdown has been frantic.  This will be my last blog post before “Codex Day,” so I wanted to discuss my latest modeling accomplishments and ruminate about moving on…

THANK YOU!

This post is for one purpose only…to thank each one of you who has visited, and continue to visit, The Shadow of Prometheus.  Today, eight months after kickoff, the blog had it’s 10,000th page view!!! YOU are the reason!  Ironically, this has occurred the same week that the new Tyranid dex is due to hit the street…wow!

Old One Eye...Unstoppable Part 2

Lemartes and his scout headed toward what appeared, on their auspex, to be the remains of a land convoy.  Once closer, they could see the burnt out remains of transport crawlers and couple of surplus Chimeras, heavily modified to handle civilian duties. Strangely, there was no sign of bodies...
