The Great Devourer...Cure for the Disease of Humanity?

It watches, it moves, it grows, adapts and watches again.  This is the Hive Mind...  The great gestalt intelligence that ensures the Universe exists in balance.  What is this you say?!  The Hive Mind sends out its' fleets to destroy and consume.  It has destroyed entire civilizations in its' unending hunger.  How can you even think it is anything more than an instinct driven horde that wishes to consume all living matter?

Ask yourself...when did the Great Devourer begin its' rapateous destruction of the known galaxy?  Was it in the time of the Ancients?  The Eldar, even the Necrotyr, do not speak of massive fleets of bio-ships that consumed entire planets.   The first historical references are from IMPERIAL contacts with the Tyranids.  Is it also by coincidence that these references are  after the time of the Great Crusade?

During the Great Crusade, better known as "The War of Compliance," Imperial forces purged the galaxy of any cultures or civilizations that did not adhere to their accepted models.  One planet after another slowly became no more than another Hive World, with biospheres and ecologies turned to industrial sludge by the work of the Adeptus Administratum and Adeptus Mechanicus.  Once pristine worlds became industrial wastelands, with their natural resources ripped from them in order to feed the endless war and growing hive populations.  Great hive cities grew like lesions on the surface of planets.  Billions and billions of humans engaging in endless, insect-like labor.  Once the resources of many planets had been exhausted, the Mechanicus and Administratum simply moved on, leaving the surviving population to fend for itself.  Caliban, former home of the Dark Angels, was such a primeval world before the coming of the Great Crusade.  After the arrival of the Emperor, the culture, and environment, of the planet were changed forever.

The Hive Mind sensed these human-wrought changes, and its collision course with the known Universe became inevitable.  If its' goal is to stop the human virus from consuming the Galaxy, then why does it also consume other races?  The answer is simply because the Hive Mind has a single-minded desire to eradicate the human disease, and the instinctual part of its' psyche does not distinguish between human and other races.  If it must use other biomass as fuel to accomplish its' ultimate goal, ridding the Galaxy of homo sapiens, then it will do so.  In essence, losses by the other races are collateral damage.

The Great Devourer is the CURE for the disease of humanity.  There is no emotion, no compassion, no sentimental tie to the preservation of life.  The Hive Mind understands that the Universe continually creates, and destroys, planets, solar systems and galaxies in a natural cycle.  It is the human race that has disrupted this cycle and must be purged.

Create, Grow, Consume, Adapt

  1. Mind blown, never thought of it that way. Really good post, thank you.

  2. Glad you enjoyed it. This is the first of a series of posts looking at the 40K Universe from the Tyranid perspective. They will all be titled "The Great Devourer."
